Let’s Talk Vitamins

A mini Introduction to the relationship between vitamins, beauty benefits & Nutrition

We’ve all heard of them.   We’ve all seen them grace the nutritional label of the food we eat.  We kinda, maybe sorta, know what they are.  But, do we really know what they do for the health of our bodies?  Since I went vegan 5 years ago, I’ve constantly been questioned by close friends, co-workers, medical professionals, and of course--my own mother-- whether I’m receiving sufficient amounts of “vitamins” in my diet. “Honestly, probably not,” is usually my immediate response.  To be truthful, I’ve never really understood the role vitamins play in my body or even how they work. Sure, I guzzle down the occasional glass of orange juice now and then-- but mostly due to the constant urge from my peers that it’s “good for you” or “you need it.” More often than not, I find myself feeling completely overwhelmed. Trips to the health food store typically consist of pacing up and down the supplement aisle for what feels like hours. Ultimately, I either give in and grab a bottle of Vitamin ___ that “looks promising” or I give up altogether and walk out empty handed.

Recently, I’ve discovered that a lack of education is probably what leads to my feelings of uncertainty. Since I personally believe we all possess the ability to learn and to change, I decided to do something to change how I feel.  The more we fill our minds with knowledge, the more power we have to make positive, life changing decisions for ourselves. A lack of knowledge is what has kept me away from vitamins for a long time and now it’s time that I do something to change the decisions I make.  I’m done making excuses for myself! So I figured, this would be the perfect opportunity to dive right in and take on vitamins once and for all!

And now that I did...oh man, am I just so excited to share with you all, everything that I’ve learned!

As this blog is dedicated to wellness and beauty, each vitamin listed below includes a list of their linked BEAUTY BENEFITS. Fun, right? I mean could it really be that easy to start growing long, luscious locks by simply adding Vitamin B7 to our diets?  Maybe!  And honestly, what’s the worst that could happen? Everything in life is worth a try-- especially when it comes to improving our health, both inside and out.

Following the list of each vitamin’s BEAUTY BENEFITS will be a list of FOOD SOURCES in which the vitamins can be found. Although I’m not discouraging you from going out and purchasing vitamins in liquid, capsule or tablet form, right after you finish reading--but it makes the task of getting the right vitamins to improve your health and “beauty” even more convenient  when you know you can receive a daily dose of vitamins simply by switching up some of the foods you eat.

Eat Pretty-- Nutrition for Beauty Inside and Out" by Jolene Hart is a book that I recently picked up and I swear when I say, “I simply can’t put it down.” Ms. Hart really brings clarity to understanding the direct relationship between nutrition and beauty-- and even includes some fun recipes, which I am so  excited to try. Nutrition truly can be our most powerful tool in the quest for radiance, at any age-- and I believe this book is an excellent guide in that journey.

So….

What Exactly Do Vitamins Do?
Vitamins boost the immune system, support growth and development, and help cells and organs do their job. All in all, they help the body function! Although we simply receive vitamins from the food we eat everyday, some foods contain more than others.

Did You Know that Vitamins Fall Into Two Categories?

Fat Soluble:
-A, D, E & K-
These vitamins dissolve into fat and are typically stored in the liver and fat tissues when they are not in use.

Water Soluble:
-C & B-
These vitamins need to dissolve into water before our bodies can absorb them. Meaning, if our bodies do not use these vitamins as they pass through our system, are lost. Therefore, we need a fresh supply of these vitamins every day.
